Snowy Fun

Generally we don't get a lot of snow in N. Ireland & usually end up looking on enviously when we see people in Scotland enjoying loads of the fluffy white stuff. This past week, parts of N.Ireland got some snow, only a few miles from us and the children were so convinced we would get some too. On Friday morning they actually sat about waiting for the snow to arrive, as if it was like the bus that arrives to take us on trips! It was hard to watch their disappointment when none arrived.
Finally on Monday evening Dungannon got some snow & it was still there on Tuesday morning so the children were so excited to see the playground coated in a blanket (albeit a very thin one) of snow.
Most of them got into their 'rain gear' immediately so they could whizz down the slide & knock the snow off it at the bottom, or climb on the snowy tree trunks & logs.
Eventually after about 30 minutes we had everyone dressed in their waterproofs & set off for a walk up to the 'big school' playground. It is such a big area & generally we are the only ones who use it on snowy days.
The children had so much fun making snow angels & throwing snowballs & just running about in the snow. Whilst we were out having so much fun, we could see several faces appearing at the windows as the older children watched on with envy! Hopefully, soon they will also have waterproofs & wellies & be able to get out & enjoy snow when we get it.

The snow was gone by the afternoon so I was glad that we had taken this opportunity to make some memories & allow the children to enjoy the snow.
I'm adding this to the Country Kids link up over at Coombe Mill.

  1. We have a big snow right now!! OK.. we have a teeny playschool in our home (ages 1.5-5) HOW do you keep things "under control" while you dress everyone?

    1. We get them dressed when outside, so the others are playing about while we call 1-2 at a time to get ready. Kierna

    1. They did Darren, sadly it hasn't come back so this may have to be one of those experiences never to be repeated! Kierna

    1. hi Emma, thanks for commenting - I was fascinated by the snow angels as these children would have been 1 the last time we had snow, so I was just so intrigued by how they knew to just lie down & make them!! Kierna

  4. Good for you getting out there with the children and enjoying it. Our school closed on the first snow day, then when the second lot came on Wednesday (two inches) we were open but the nursery was closed as it was deemed too dangerous to cross the playground (!). The children weren't allowed out in the yard and it lay pristine until the caretaker went and swept it all away :-(

    1. Sad isn't it - I mean I understand if buses etc. are off & schools have to close but when it's just a little snow it's not any danger for children to be out in it. I heard all the excuses this week - we have rain gear for some of the bigger ones, but they had no wellies! I mean this is a once in a wonder thing for us, I'm sure parents would be ok with wet shoes for 1 day! or maybe I'm in the minority? Thanks for the support.

  5. Delighted to see you had some snow (we didn't) and that you were able to go out in it. I know how cross TheBoyandMe was that she couldn't take her class out for play and learning with snow. I think your children know what to expect now going straight for those lovely rainproof sets! Great fun photos, thank you for linking up.

    1. No worries Fiona - hope you do manage to get some of the white stuff at some point. Isn't it great to see how many people got out & about & enjoyed the snow though? Kierna

  6. Hi Kierna, You must get similar weather to us here in SW Scotland then. We managed two days of snow enough for a snow man, snow dog, a bit of a snow ball fight and my middle boy attempted a snow angel but lay face down instead of on his back lol! Thanks for linking up with me across at http://littleboybluetoddleschool.blogspot.co.uk/.

    1. Hi Sonia, yes think the smiles say it all don't they. Of course, it's usually a little warmer when you do actually get some snow, so they weren't wuite as cold as they had been on other days! Kierna
